Is blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) right for you?

If our eyes reveal our souls, then our eyelids reveal our age. It’s a fact of life that as we age our eyelids lose their elasticity and tend to droop. Moreover, bags can appear beneath our eyes. Fortunately, these things can be counteracted with eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, a procedure that our team at Montreal’s Centre de Chirurgie Plastique de l’Île-des-Sœurs has lots of experience with. Read this article to find out whether this plastic surgery is the right option for you.

What is a blepharoplasty procedure?
Blepharoplasty is a relatively simple eyelid surgery that consists principally of removing an excess of skin and fat and making extremely fine incisions using precision tools.

In upper lid blepharoplasty surgery, incisions are made along the eyelid’s natural fold, thereby concealing the resulting scar. In lower lid blepharoplasty surgery, incisions are made either on the inner surface of the eyelids or on top of the eyelashes. During the procedure, fat is removed or repositioned and excess skin is cut away. Once the procedure is finished, the surgeon closes the incisions with small stitches, which are taken out after several days and don’t leave any lasting marks.

Who can get a blepharoplasty procedure?
Eyelid surgery is for men and women who want to make their eyes look more youthful. When facial tissue is healthy, it fixes the following problems:

• Drooping of the upper eyelids
• Excess skin on the lower eyelids
• Bags under the eyes

Note that if you’re a smoker, you’re more susceptible to surgical risks and healing problems.

Did you know?
If drooping eyelids are bothering your vision, the cost of a blepharoplasty might be covered by the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). Look into it!
